What are phrasal verbs?
Phrasal verbs are two- and three-word verbs such as: act up, come out, and sit around. Phrasal verbs consist of a verb and another word or phrase, usually a preposition. The word that is joined with a verb in this construction is called a particle. Phrasal verbs can have multiple meanings, so it is wise to have a dictionary of phrasal verbs or to have a dictionary that includes phrasal verbs as run-ons to the regular entries. (You can find phrasal verbs at http://www.Dictionary.com/.) For beginning language learners, it is a challenge to master phrasal verbs. Special ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction and a great deal of time spent listening and reading carefully will help. It is wise to have a good ESL dictionary.
