Who Needs a Periodontist?
We treat people from all walks of life because periodontal diseases are far more common than the common cold. 90% of adults and 30% of children have some form of periodontal disease. You are far more likely to lose your teeth to periodontal diseases than from cavities. In fact, periodontal diseases account for fully 60% of all adult tooth extractions. Fortunately, most periodontal diseases are preventable and treatable if recognized on time. Surprisingly, research by the American Academy of Periodontology suggests that 80% of the population report that they never had gum disease, although 72% of these respondents noted one or more symptoms. In addition, 70% of this population erroneously believes that it is “not very likely” or “not at all likely” that they will lose their teeth and need to wear dentures.
