What if I’m a virgin?
A pelvic exam is recommended for virgins any time you are considering becoming sexually active to discuss protection from STDs and unwanted pregnancy. An exam is also recommended if you have symptoms of a vaginal infection such as itching or pain; infections are not always caused by STDs. Many women will choose to have a pelvic exam at age 18-20. A pelvic exam will not destroy your virginity, which is defined by your sexual abstinence, not your hymen. The hymen of most women is ruptured through normal activity by the time of their first period. You should definitely notify your practitioner if you are a virgin so she will use extra care during the exam.
