Should voting be made compulsory?…?

In a free country, I don’t think that voting should be mandatory. More votes does not necessarily equate better representation. There are many people who simply don’t have an interest in politics. The majority of Americans are sadly ignorant of how their government works. Forcing them to vote would only make them resentful. I would like to see in increase in informed voters. But I disagree that making it mandatory is the answer. I would rather require government schools to effectively teach government (and other subjects) and make them and students accountable. Our high school graduates are terribly ignorant about the subject and parents usually don’t teach civic responsibility at home.
