In the 1890s Dr Maria Montessori founded a school for underprivileged children in Rome, advocating cultural and religious tolerance and care for the environment. She realised that each child had an individual pace and capacity for learning of its own. Hence, every Montessori child is taught at its own pace, and is truly treated as an individual. Each child is on an individual work programme so they fulfil their own potential. Workbooks are used but each is carefully prepared for each child.
