What is the Maryland Food Bank?
Founded in 1979, the Maryland Food Bank provides food for the hungry in the entire state of Maryland, excluding Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties, which are served by the Capital Area Food Bank. We solicit, collect, purchase and store food from farmers, manufacturers, brokers, wholesalers, retailers, restaurants, caterers, hotels, cafeterias, and others in the food industry and distribute it to nonprofit community food providers that provide free food to the hungry. The Maryland Food Bank is an affiliate of Feeding America, the national network of food banks and food rescue programs. In December 2002, the Maryland Food Bank was re-certified with the Maryland Nonprofits’ Standards for Excellence. With this certification, we are able to demonstrate to the public, our donors, and our constituents that we are committed to the highest industry standards and are accountable to the community we serve.
