Can hymns be vamped?

Whilst I appreciate the reason for this piece, I worry slightly at the re-arrangement of hymns for a ‘vamped’ bass. The whole beauty of hymn tunes is the strirring harmonic progressions that lead the melody. I think it is important that pupils are moved to the real thing ASAP. Hymns are some of the best sight reading practice available! On a cruise we once had a ‘professional’ pianist who was completely flumoxed by the left hand of hymns on Sunday. His vamping attempts were excruciating.
