How are sponges harvested?
Back in the ‘old’ days as early as the 1800’s, sponges were harvested by using long poles with hooks on the end, a fisherman would station his dingy over the ‘sponge bed’, then looking down through a ‘water glass’ would hook or grapple the sponges off their resting place as he pleased. This however, ruined any chances of ever being able to reap sponges from this location again. See Sponge Harvesting for an update on the best methods now used to ensure future harvesting while protecting the natural habitat and environs.
