However, I don’t think it should be counted any more because it has split into a whole family of different cocktails that don’t have much to do with each other. The margarita is very famous and may be currently the most popular, with a huge number of Mexican style restaurants serving it. However, I’m not sure that it is famous world wide, and its popularity is relatively recent. I would say that the Bloody Mary may be the world’s most famous and popular cocktail. It was invented by an American in Europe back at the start of the cocktail era. It has been famous and popular in Europe and America ever since. However, another contender would be the Gin and Tonic. It’s simple, has been around since the beginning of cocktails, and is enjoyed world wide.
