WHY are so many people depressed?
There are 2 primary reasons why depression is so prevalent in modern society. 1) The medical profession is so much better at diagnosing it than used to be the case. Also, the populace is much more aware of depression, so more people are seeking treatment for it than in past eras. 2) Humans evolved in an environment where mental stressors were generally intermittent and short in duration.
