How Do You Frame A Door Opening?

• Determine the size of the door you will be installing. Take into consideration what types and sizes of items you will be placing in the room. For example if the door leads to a laundry area, make sure the door will be large enough to fit a washer and dryer. • Rough framing sizes are 2″ wider the the door itself. So mark you door opening on both the top and bottom plates 2″ wider than the door you want to install. • Cut the jack studs at 81″ tall for a 6′-8″ tall door. This will allow you to adjust the door for square or shim it off the floor. • Cut your header 3″ longer then the rough opening. The jack studs fit under the header. Size the header based on the width of the rough opening. • Nail it all together, use 16d nails through the jack studs and into the header. Nail through the jack studs and into the king studs.
