What piano is better, Petrof or Kawai?
I think that race is too close to call. I’m kind of surprised that the Kawai didn’t speak to you. You’ve got to play each of these potential candidates and choose from there. I love Petrof grands, but I’ve got much more limited exposure to their uprights. I believe they would have all the same build quality. All pianos (even mass produced ones) are hand made. It’s the care that goes into shaping the bridges, sanding the sound boards, fitting the ribs and tonal finishing that sets the finest pianos apart from “production” pianos. … There is no reason to believe that a Petrof’s hammers would pack down after just a few months unless you played a million strokes on each key at full velocity. Unlike the horror stories of chape Asian pianos, hammers in the Petrof (and Kawai) are not chemically treated for voicing.
