Budget-wise…well, the best tripod is one that you actually have with you to use. I’ve seen people buy heavy tripods that are inexpensive, but because they are too heavy to carry, they don’t get used. Personally, I also prefer a ball-head, but you may like a panhead instead. I personally use and recommend two tripods: 1) a light one for travel and carrying around 2) a heaver one for bigger lenses and more sturdiness. The light one I recommend is the Velbon Ultra Luxi-SF, seen here on the manufacturer’s page: http://www.velbon-tripod.com/ultra_maxi.… It’s light and small enough to take on an airplane, folds to under 14″, will hold about 5 lbs (i.e. easily will take an EOS 400D with standard lens), and gets about 48″ in height.
