In the US, it all began with the WW II bomber jacket, a short, wool lined, warm, and flexible jacket used in the unheated, high altitude bombers. Returning servicemen ‘bobbed” their surplus Harleys for lightness, competition, and esthetics, and made use of as much cheap military surplus stuff that was available. Commercial jackets modified the basic design from there.
