A Health Information Exchange (HIE) is an information technology which enables the secure, electronic exchange of patient specific health information among healthcare providers and patients on a local (for example the Meridian HIE), regional (for example the Monmouth Ocean Health Information Exchange), and on a future state/federal basis once these systems exist. This exchange of healthcare data is intended to drive timely, efficient, high-quality, preventive, and patient-centered care.
