What is a Voice Clinic and how can my child be referred to the GOSH Voice Clinic?
A Voice Clinic is an outpatient clinic that assesses someone with a voice problem using a camera and special scope (a laryngoscope) whilst they make speech or voice sounds. The camera is placed in the mouth or into the nose whilst the person is talking. The voice box (larynx) can be seen moving and slow motion pictures can be recorded for a detailed assessment of what the problems are. An ENT Doctor and a Speech and Language Therapist specialising in voice problems are present in the clinic and together make a diagnosis of the problem and decide on the options for treating the problem. The procedure is not painful although a topical anaesthetic spray can be used. Children can be seen in the Clinic at any age. Your child will need to be referred by your GP or their hospital Consultant stating clearly what the problem is. The referral can be made to the ENT or Speech and Language Therapy Departments at GOSH.
