What does the report spam button do?
Every piece of mail is sent from an ip address. In many cases, enough people hit report spam, and the ip address sending the mail is blocked by your mail service provider (hotmail, aol, Comcast, yahoo, etc.) Unfortunately, this usually does not help since most spammers have many other ips waiting to send mail when one get blocked. If the company sending you the email is reputable, your mail service provider will send a copy of the message back to the sender indicating that you complained (this is called a feedback loop). Hitting Report Spam usually does not result in you getting less email either because you protect your identity, the mail service provider does not pass along your email address with it, giving the company no way to unsubscribe you. However, some companies will alter their sending methods as a result. Many Mail Service providers have a report spam button; unfortunately, few provide the feedback loop to market companies, to help unsubscribe you.
