What causes AMD?
There is no known cause for macular degeneration. Studies have identified risk factors for the disease, some of which are modifiable, meaning that you can minimize your exposure to these factors. These modifiable risk factors include cigarette smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Other risk factors include a family member with the disease, hyperopia, light iris color and the female gender.
