Coenzyme Q10 (also known as Ubiquinone) is a powerful antioxidant that is vital for energy production in every cell of the human body.  It increases tissue oxygenation, stimulates the immune system, aids healthy circulation and has been shown to have anti-aging protective properties as well.  As an anti-oxidant, it cleanses the body of potentially harmful chemicals released by cells during the natural metabolic process. Because it is used in every cell of the body, there are many health benefits of Coenzyme Q10.

Coenzyme Q10 is found naturally in the body, but the supply decreases with age and supplementation is recommended. Coenzyme Q10 deficiency has been definitively linked to an increased risk of heart disease as well as periodontal disease of the gums.

CoQ10, as it is typically labeled, has been shown in studies to be an effective combatant against heart disease and is prescribed regularly by doctors in Japan to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease and reduce high blood pressure.  CoQ10 strengthens the heart muscle and has been shown in US clinical studies to reduce blood pressure without the side effects often caused by medications.

Coenzyme Q10 has been studied extensively throughout the world, showing great promise for the treatment of many diseases including breast cancer, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, periodontal disease, obesity and Alzheimer’s.  It has also been used to reduce the negative effects of chemotherapy in cancer treatment and one study suggested it may even help to shrink breast cancer tumors and reduce damage to the heart when taken in conjunction with chemotherapy.

There are many health benefits of Coenzyme Q10

    • Prevention of cardiovascular disease and reduced risk of heart attack for those with high blood pressure
    • CoQ10 boosts the immune system contributing to better overall health and wellness.
    • Preventing and treating gum disease.  Studies showed a link between periodontitis and low levels of Coenzyme Q10 in the gums.
    • Coenzyme Q10 fights free radicals in the body that can lead to various cancers.
    • Increased longevity and anti-aging benefits due to increased oxygenation of the tissues.
    • CoQ10 has been shown to have antihistamine effects making it beneficial to allergy sufferers and those with asthma.

Coenzyme Q10 occurs naturally in oily fish like salmon and sardines.  It is also found in smaller amounts in spinach and peanuts.

CoQ10 supplements are readily available and should ideally be taken in a liquid or oil form. Doses range from 20 to 100mg.  It is perishable, so finding a product with both CoQ10 and vitamin E combined can help ensure freshness since vitamin E is a natural preservative. Coenzyme Q10 is fat soluble and is best absorbed when taken with food. It should be stored at room temperature and not exposed to light or heat.
