What is Victims Rights?

0

Victim’s rights vary by state. On the following link there is a list of all states with the rights listed in each state. Generally speaking, victims of person to person crime (assault, menacing, harassment, etc)have more rights but all victims have the right to be treated with dignity and respect, appeal to the judge for restitution, receive timely notification of court dates, and notification if the status of the accused changes (probation is terminated, they are sent to jail, etc). Most counties have victim advocates that work with their police department and additional ones that work in the District Attorney’s office. I would encourage you to contact them if you have any questions. If you feel your rights are being violated you can contact someone at the state level, often through the Attorney Generals office.
