Can anyone have a MRI procedure?
No, there are certain medical implants that are not safe in a magnetic field. If a patient has a cardiac pacemaker or defibrillator, they can not have a MRI. Having these devices in a strong magnetic field could shut them down resulting in death. Also patients with brain aneurysm clips will need to be cleared with the MRI technologist before they can enter the magnetic field. Some styles of brain aneurysm clips are made of material that is magnetic. Older style aneurysm clips can be moved within the body if exposed to a strong magnetic field resulting in serious injury or death. Patients with electrical (neuro or bone) stimulators can not have a MRI. Patients who wear hearing aids will need to take them out before they enter the magnetic field, for risk of damaging the device. Every patient, before having a MRI procedure, will need to fill out an MRI Saftey Screening Form before entering the magnetic field.
