Different salarys question?

As long as they’re on the same pay band as you then it’s fine. Pay bands can vary a lot (the pay band I’m on has a difference of £10k from bottom point to top) and your employer can decide to appoint anywhere within the band. Generally a public sector organisation will have it’s own policies on when they will appoint people higher up than the bottom of the pay scale for that band. One of the things most will consider is salary in previous job. It can be a pain at times – in my last job I had way more experience than one of my colleagues in the same job, yet I was bottom of the scale and she was top of the scale, earning about £6k a year more – all because she’d been in a completely different job previously that had paid more.
