I think it’s a personal choice and “best” will vary for the person and what you want it to do. For storing data, I really like the PAF program that you can download for free from the LDS church at familysearch.org. It works for what I need it to do and the price is right. My mom prefers Family Tree Maker. It links up with ancestry.com, has some pretty cool user-friendly advanced features, and is more visually appealing. The cool thing about most genealogy software is the file type can be saved in a format that most programs will read, so if you try one and don’t like it, you can keep your data.
