Was Gaslighting Used?
Before making any selection of gas fixtures, physical or documentary evidence must be present to indicate that gaslighting was used in the building or street under consideration. Capped gas butts in areas such as back corridors, attics, cellars, or butler’s pantries may provide visible evidence. If no visible evidence exists, gas pipes within walls can supply convincing evidence, provided that they can be shown not to have serviced heating or cooking appliances rather than lighting fixtures. Because gas pipes were run within the walls and did not show, it is highly improbable that they were ever entirely removed when electric lighting was installed in a formerly gaslighted building. Therefore, if there is no physical trace of gaslight system within a structure, any documentary evidence seemingly to the contrary should be interpreted with the greatest caution.
