What exactly is an ASBO?
ASBO is the short name for an Antisocial Behaviour Order. You may have heard about ASBOs on the TV or read about them in the newspapers. Quite simply, an ASBO is a Court Order that tells a person to stop behaving in an antisocial way. For example, an ASBO can order an offender not to shout, swear or verbally abuse their neighbours. An ASBO can also order offenders to stay away from particular areas of the town or to stop associating with friends who have caused a nuisance in the neighbourhood. Having an ASBO served on you is not a criminal offence but it is a criminal offence to breach the terms of an ASBO. The penalty for this can be arrest without a warrant, a fine or a jail term.
