Which coat/jacket looks nicer?

I agree that the first coat looks thicker. (What the heck is synthetic wool? Acrylic?) I don’t think the collar is an issue; from the back it looks like a regular collar. It’s only that the lapel is separated from the collar that makes it look different. This collar reminds my husband of military attire from the early 1800s. It is shorter than the second coat. The second coat looks like a traditional trench coat, except that it is too short. It has a more reserved look, and it is slightly longer than the first coat. I, too, prefer the first, thicker coat for its style. You don’t say if you live in southern or northern England, but especially if this is to be your only coat, I would go with the thicker one. However, you could always layer a sweater or vest under the second coat for more warmth. Sometimes it is impossible to tell how a thing will work out until you have it in hand.
