Is making a batch file illegal?
It really depends on the purpose of the batch file. Also, “harmless” may be a matter of opinion and what you may call “harmless” may actually be malicious by my definition. If you honestly want to impress your friends, show them what you’ve done and the how and why it works the way it does. Having been in the know about some interesting computer pranks, I can say that they are usually not fun for anyone other than the ones who know about them. Sadly geek humor is a bit strange at times and it is often only funny to a geek. It doesn’t help that the asylum is often run by the inmates and those in power don’t have a clue. To put this another way… If I send you a program for you to run, I promise it won’t hurt your computer and it is “harmless”, would you run it? Keep in mind I’ve been in computers for 30+ years and I am what many would describe as an old hacker with the skills and tools to create programs that would be undetectable as malware.
