Are Macs running Windows vulnerable?
I was asked if a Mac running Windows simultaneously with the Mac’s own operating system was still vulnerable to Windows malware once Windows is shut down. The answer is No. But this is worth investigating, so I’ll share my full response with you. The reader said he installed Parallels, which lets Mac users install and run a full version of Windows alongside the Mac’s own OS X operating system, in order to run two specific Windows programs, Microsoft Money and Family Tree Maker. Both have no equivalents among software for OS X. Here’s my reply: When your Mac is running the full version of Windows, well, your Mac is running the full version of Windows. There is no free lunch when it comes to Windows vulnerabilities, so, as you know, having a Windows computer in front of you means that PC and the files on it are going to get whacked by invaders of all kinds. HOWEVER, shutting down that Windows PC cancels all the vulnerabilities. So when Parallels is not running, there is no problem. In fa
