Why don Kigurumist speak?
A Kigurumist will not speak while in costume. One of the reasons why a Kigurumist will not speak is because it is very difficult to hear someone who speaks while wearing a Kigurumi mask. If Kigurumist were to try to talk while wearing a Kigurumi mask, the Kigurumist voice will sound very muffled and unintelligible. In fact, the Kigurumi artist would have to shout in order to be heard/understood. Additionally most Kigurumi artists cannot imitate the voice of the character they are trying to portray. (Or even be heard if they could imitate the voice.) Thus, since Kigurumi is all about the illusion of the character, a Kigurumi artist will not speak, but instead will use pantomime gestures to communicate with others.
