Gas or flatulence is trapped air in the digestive tract. The gas is supposed to be odorless but such is not the case because as it passes the large intestine bacteria are carried though the rectum. Gas is produced by too much swallowing air. Almost all babies have gone through an episode of mild to severe gas pain due to the swallowing air while bottle-feeding. Adults swallow air while sucking on candies or chewing gum. Gas is also caused by the breakdown of particular foods in the large intestine. The least gaseous of food are proteins and fats. The most gaseous of food are carbohydrates because they are harder to break down. Generally, gas is not a cause for alarm.
