What is an Incomplete?
An “incomplete” is a course on which you are missing a final exam, paper or other assignment. In order to make up the missing work, you must request an incomplete through the Emory College Office for Undergraduate Education by calling 404-727-6069 to set up an appointment. If an incomplete is not requested, your letter grade will be factored accordingly.
(From the 2007-08 CSUEB Catalog, except for the bracketed notes:) The symbol “I”, Incomplete (Authorized), indicates that a portion of required coursework has not been completed and evaluated in the prescribed time period due to unforeseen, but fully justified, reasons and that there is still a possibility of earning credit. [This means the student must be passing the course when an Incomplete is assigned. See WU below.] It is [the student’s] responsibility to bring pertinent information to the attention of the instructor and to determine from the instructor the remaining course requirements that must be satisfied to remove the Incomplete. A final grade is assigned when the work agreed upon has been completed and evaluated. [The] instructor will specify the work needed for completion and will communicate the requirements to [the student] in writing with a copy to the department or program chair. An “I” must normally be made up within one calendar year immediately following the end of t
An “I” (Incomplete) may be assigned by an instructor in place of the grade for a course. This indicates that the student’s work is of passing quality, but his/her coursework for the quarter is not complete at the time grades must be submitted. Any grade of Incomplete will remain indefinitely on the permanent record unless the work is completed and a grade is assigned. NOTE: Incompletes are treated as F’s only when students are to be certified for graduation: at that time an assessment of GPA is made based on all units attempted. If the student’s overall GPA is at least 2.0 including the Incomplete grades computed as F’s, then the student may graduate. If the Incomplete grades computed as F’s decrease the student’s GPA below 2.0, then the student may not graduate until enough Incomplete grades have been made up to bring the GPA to 2.0.
We know that on occasion, adult students have other important obligations that may require them to put their coursework on hold. A student may request an incomplete from his/her instructor and must specify a compelling reason for the inability to complete the course requirements by the end of the term. The student is required to complete and submit the required work within sixty (60) calendar days of the end of the term to prevent conversion of the incomplete I to a grade of F.
A grade of Incomplete may be given to students who, because of illness or circumstances beyond their control, are unable to complete their coursework within the semester. An Incomplete is given only if you have finished at least 80% of the semester with a grade of C or better, and you provided evidence to the Instructor that you are unable to continue. An Incomplete Grade Form must be filed by the Instructor with the Admissions and Records Office when submitting grades. See the Grading System section of the College Catalog for further details regarding an Incomplete.
