What is a Secular Franciscan?
During the lifetime of St. Francis, many lay people were attracted to his simplicity, humility and joy. They wished to follow in his footsteps and adopt his spirituality as a means of growing closer to the Lord. Interior conversion and growth in the spiritual life is one’s first purpose in becoming a follower of St. Francis as a member of the Secular Franciscans. Toward this end, an elected council, along with a Franciscan Friar Spiritual Assistant, offer opportunities and guidelines for deepening our commitment to the Gospel and Our Lord, through our prayers, meetings and time of fellowship together. A period of formation precedes a permanent commitment, or profession, by which one promises to make Christ the inspiration and center of one’s life; a wonderful commitment which is as relevant today as it was in the time of the saint.
