“Global Studies in Plant Biology” is a new umbrella encompassing short-term international study abroad experiences with field courses. Each program generally consists of a seminar course with travel-related workshops introducing a particular geographic region chosen that is part of an academic quarter, and an intensive short-term international field course during Winter Intersession or Summer Session depending on the destination and objectives. The geographic (and sometimes, topical) focus usually changes each year, roving about the world to spotlight different physiographic regions and their plant life. Although the focus of most upcoming “Global Studies” programs emphasize non-continental U.S. areas in order to internationalize the PBIO curriculum, occasional future courses will target “domestic” regions, to acquaint students with communities within and outside of the contiguous United States (e.g., Island Biology in Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest).
