Why is “fossil” feul oil found so deep in the Earths crust and way under the sea floor?
Near-surface oil reserves have largely been depleted, so we need to look deeper and deeper as we use up the resources. In the early 1900’s, there was lots of oil produced from within a few hundred meters of surface around Lake Erie (Ontario and Ohio). Not all the world’s fossil fuel (not feul) deposits are deep, for example the oil-bearing sandstones exposed on the beach in Santa Barbara, California, and the huge oil sand deposits in Fort McMurray, Canada. Keep in mind that our ideas of fossil fuel originating from living organic matter (plants and animals) is a theory which has never been proven. It certainly seems very believable as there is a lot of very good evidence, but bitumens have also been found in Precambrian granites.
