He was a Deist, but probably better accurately described as a Quaker. Look up Quaker to see all that it entails, which is too nuanced to really give justice here. Paine’s saying from Age of Reason, “My own mind is my own church,” is often seen on the marquees of Unitarian Churches. This saying resonates strongly with me. Paine was strongly and passionately patriotic. Paine was strongly and passionately for the separation of Church and State.
