Anxiety stalks the sidelines for every final preseason game in the National Football League. It’s the last game for players to make an impression on coaches before the final cutdown. Coaches hearts pound a little faster because they don’t want to get a valuable starter hurt in the last dress rehearsal. Under those circumstances, the Giants took to a slippery, rain-soaked Frank Howard Field at Clemson University yesterday to play the Carolina Panthers. And before the half was over, the Giants’ worst fear was coming to life. Quarterback Dave Brown lay motionless on the ground for about three minutes — unconscious for 10 seconds, by his own count — after getting hammered by Carolina linebacker Carlton Bailey, a former Giant, and cornerback Tyrone Poole while scrambling toward the Panthers’ sideline.
