The word “co-op” usually refers to property owned by a corporation for the benefit of its members. While the incorporated homeowners association (HOA) owns most of our common area, our living spaces are technically “condominiums” because we own them outright (or rent them from individual owners). This is a subtle distinction, but an important one for lenders, insurers, and tax assessors.
