What is WIOCC?
WIOCC (www.wiocc.net) is a company set up as a vehicle for investment in the EASSy submarine cable system, with its offices in Nairobi, Kenya. WIOCC is jointly owned by a grouping of 14 African telecoms operators in the eastern and southern half of Africa, all first or second-tier operators in their respective countries. WIOCC is also funded by a number of global Development Finance Institutions (DFI’s) such as the World Bank, AfDB, AFD & KFW. WIOCC is the single largest shareholder (29%) in the EASSy cable. As well as serving EASSy’s 9 seaboard countries, WIOCC is using its shareholders’ extensive backhaul national networks to take services from EASSy’s coastal landing stations to major cities in each country. These resilient backhauls mean landlocked countries will now have access to the same high-speed, fibre-based international connectivity as coastal countries, for the first time. WIOCC is also extending services beyond the EASSy network by establishing interconnection agreements
