Knock is a Marion Shrine.During the Irish Famine,when the staple crop of potatoes failed and people were starving two children witnessed the appearance of Our Lady at the Gable end of a church.The West of Ireland was very poor and depressed and this occurance was reckoned to be a “sign from above” of strength and support to aid people in the crises.The Pope visited Knock when he came to Ireland.People have claimed to be cured of serious illness at Knock by touching the Gable wall where Our Lady appeared.It rains a lot there bring a good weatherproof coat if contemplating a visit.
