Inspiration and The Call To Write

The inspiration or ”call to write” can come in many different ways and mean many different
things. It could be a lifelong dream you have always wanted to pursue, it can one tap you on the
shoulder when you least expect it, a side job you do to pay the bills or a hobby you just do for
fun. For me, the call to write was a strange and twisting one, one I did not expect and one that
scared me to death at the age of 15.
I have always had a talent for coming up with stories or writing stories from the time I was
small, but while hitting puberty, I realized I wanted to write for a living. From this moment, I
had no interest in dating girls or driving cars, all I knew was that I wanted to write short
stories and screenplays about The Lost Continent of Atlantis. When I was confronted with the self-
awareness I was getting older and the internal question of ”What do I want to do with my
life?” I knew it had to be writing, since I always had that ”creative” streak in me.
After contemplating this decision over Thanksgiving and Christmas of the year 2000, the new year
dawned and one day I watched teaser trailer on television for a Disney movie entitled ”Atlantis:
The Lost Empire”, and an idea bolted through my head ”That’s it!”, I knew I had my first solid
story. The film itself later turned out to be a flop, but I started writing short stories and
screenplays about Atlantis and would continue to do so for the next few years.
