How did Britain become a weakling?
Britain is hardly a weakling, any nation that can deliver Nuclear Weapons should never be underestimated. But in answer to your question the demise of the British empire came about due to WWII where Britain FOUGHT ALONE for most of the war against a powerful foe, defending Democracy as we know it. In doing so we got into lots of debt, and also because of the help of India and other commonwealth countries gave us, it was decided they should be given independance, and we couldnt afford to keep them. And countries like India, China have benefited massively in the long run from Britains ruling, we set the foundations for what they have become. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
How sad that someone so lacking in education poses such questions. To your last addendum: Iraq is not our war, it is America’s war. Our troops are only there to make it look like the world agrees with what the USA is doing. Control of The British Empire was handed over to the individual countries because it is what they wanted. We still have hugely loyal military and financial ties with ALL our former colonies and the Commonwealth, of which the USA is not part. Britain is still one of the G8 nations. With the USA’s national debt at the level it currently is I think your comments are almost invalid, the USA is not far from bankrupt.
Britain took on Hitler in 1939 alone with her Empire States Canada Australia etc. The costs were outstanding. They began the war without all the machines and guns that was necessary to win the war. Hitler had been arming in the mid thirties. Read Churchill’s account of the Second World War. Not until the end of 1941 did the U. S. enter the war. For three years Britain struggled to get the upper hand. The debt incurred by Britain left the broke and recovery almost impossible.
