What a Humerus Fracture?
A break in the upper arm bone (the bone extending from the shoulder to the elbow) is a humerus fracture or humeral shaft fracture. The majority of humerus fractures heal with a sling or brace and do not require surgery. The three types of humerus fractures are proximal humerus fractures, mid-shaft humerus fractures, and distal humerus fractures: Proximal humerus fractures: This type of fracture occurs near the shoulder joint. Proximal fractures are also sometimes associated with other broken bones, including scapula fractures, clavicle fractures, glenoid fractures and rib fractures. Mid-Shaft humerus fractures: Of the three types of humerus fractures, a mid-shaft humerus fracture is the least likely to require surgery. This type of fracture does not usually cause injury to the shoulder or elbow joint, but may cause damage to the radial nerve. Distal Humerus fracture: This type of fracture, which occurs near the elbow joint, occurs much more frequently in children than in adults. Distal
