PS3s are not region free, the games are region free. You can play PS3 Japanese games because all PS3 GAMES are region free. You can not play PS1 Japanese games because PS1 games are region locked. You can not play PS2 games on a PS3 slim, but if you could, you couldn’t play PS2 Japanese games either because they also are region locked. Be aware that some games are only made for PAL PS3s, which means while you can play the game on your PS3, the only way to see the game is to use an HDMI cable (because HDMI is universal for the world). Japan and North America use the same video signal (NTSC), so you will have no problem playing a PS3 Japanese game if you are not using an HDMI cable.
