What makes soy heart-healthy?
Soyfoods have many nutritional benefits that can contribute to a heart healthy diet. Soyfoods are low in saturated fat and cholesterol-free. According to a statement from the AHA, “soy products such as tofu, soy butter, soy nuts, or some soy burgers should be beneficial to cardiovascular and overall health because of their high content of polyunsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins, minerals and low content of saturated fat and no cholesterol.” (11,12) The soy protein also has the added benefit of lowering LDL cholesterol and possibly blood pressure (9 – 16).
