Pivot tables are a very powerful feature used in Excel and other software that enable the user to summarize and analyze large amounts of data in lists and tables. While they may appear to be complex, it is just another way to easily construct dynamic summary tables without cutting and pasting, or writing formulas. The beauty of pivot tables is that they allow you to look at large amounts of data at the same time in various ways. Why is this important? Because, looking at the same data in different ways provides an avenue to identity and analyze trends and data gaps that are not easily observed in spreadsheets alone. Pivot tables can be built directly in Excel or from records selected from outside sources.
