Approximately 54% of all crashes occur in urban areas, but 63% of all traffic deaths occur in rural areas. In Michigan, it is estimated that more than $750 million is spent each year on medical costs due to the non-use of safety belts. Nearly $1.5 billion of income is lost each year in Michigan due to the non-use of safety belts.
