Is Aks a morality tale?
No, in fact it’s a roller-coaster ride. Once you get on you can’t get off. But yes, it’s about achcha aadmi and bura aadmi. Before I started making Aks, I was discussing another film with Abhishek as his debut venture that Jayaji wanted me to make. It was a script called Samjhauta Express. We were all set to go on the floors when I got a call from Jayaji in Bangalore saying she had bad news–J.P. Dutta was making Abhishek’s debut film. That must have thrown you off gear. Not really, it was his choice. I couldn’t do anything about it. The only thing was Abhishek and I had worked together for two years on the story. He had started maintaining a diary on his character. It was a very difficult, politically motivated character. I guess everyone was wary of the repercussions, and I wasn’t willing to compromise. I never am. One day I’m going to make Samjhauta Express. What are you now making for the Bachchans? It’s a story written for all three of them called Bhairavi. Yes, it’s a family film
