Should Cockapoos Become a Breed?

I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with mixed breeds, the problem lies with the people who tend to breed them, and those who tend to buy them. As a general rule, most people who breed mixed breeds are in it for money. They breed without knowing the ins and outs of both breeds, and without years of experience with them. They are playing into the fad of designer dogs. The same people who usually buy these dogs buy them on a whim, also without knowing fully what they are getting into. These dogs are then dumped on shelters, adding to the overpopulation problem and the countless dogs which are euthanized each year. Of course there are always exceptions. My mother just recently bought the family’s second schnauzer/poodle mix (the older one they have is 10 years old now), despite my lectures about pet stores, puppy mills, and back yard breeders. I do not live at home anymore, so I didn’t exactly have a choice in the process. The problem is that our first “schnoodle” was purchas

“Size can be influenced by either parent’s recent background. Adult individuals 10″ at the shoulder or less are toy size. Dogs 11″-14″ at the shoulder are considered mini size, and those 15″ at the shoulder and over are standard size. Cockapoo size is judged by their height, not their weight. Two dogs who are the same size can vary considerably in weight depending both on their overall build and whether one is fat or thin. Poodle sizes are graded on height measured to the top of the shoulder at standing position. Weights of individuals will depend on the factors explained above. To give a general idea of weight, a toy would ideally weigh under 12 pounds, a Mini 13-20 pounds and a Standard 21 pounds and up. ” That whole segment right there is way too broad to be called a standard. it describes half the mutts in shelters today. So I would have to say no, this mix should NOT be recognized as a breed until they can get the standard under control. And the fact that they have been trying for

Absolutely NOT! I am a euthanasia tech at the animal shelter I work for and I put down hundreds of unwanted animals on a monthly basis. It is awful to bring even more dogs (or cats) into this world when there is already an enormous pet over-population problem. By making cockapoos an accepted breed, the AKC will just be adding to this horrible problem. If a person wants a pet, please go to your local animal shelter and save ones life. Don’t make my job harder than it already is. Oh god, you are breeding them. Shame on you! You are a nothing more than a backyard breeder and people like you are responsible for the fact that I put down 400 animals last month. You and your kind of people disgust me. Go take a walk through your local animal shelter. Look into each of those animals eyes. Know that over half will be put to death because of irresponsible, selfish people like you. You make me sick. JOANIE: I WORK at an animal shelter. I HAVE euthanized countless animals. You, what, VOLUNTEERED?
