CAN SHERIFFS TRUMP CHAIRMANSHIP?
On the Republican side of the attorney general’s race little-known state Rep. Joe Negron of Stuart is proving how legislative committee chairmanships can be mighty fundraising tools. Negron, who heads the powerful House Budget Committee, reported raising more than $600,000 (far more than any Democratic gubernatorial candidate), including $138,000 in the quarter ending June 30. As a freshman state representative, Republican Everett Rice of Treasure Island lacks that kind of fundraising perch, but pulled in nearly $108,000 over the last three months. Still Rice is expected to have strong support from Florida Sheriffs, whose support could prove to crucial in the race for attorney general. State Rep. Burt Saunders, R-Naples, reeled in nearly $57,000 for his attorney general campaign.
