Federal News Radio reports that the Continental Air Defense Command was the precursor to NORAD and launched over half a century ago. An ad for Sears in the Colorado Springs, Colo., newspaper gave people a number to call if they wanted to talk to Santa Claus but the number printed in the paper was for the Colorado Spring’s Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Center. The colonel on duty told his staff to provide callers with “Santa’s location” and it soon became an annual tradition. How does NORAD track Santa? NORAD uses a radar, satellites, Santa Cams and fighter jets to track Santa. The radar has 47 installations around the North Pole.
